I Already Eat Healthy, So Why Should I Detox?

March 27, 2019

Detox programs are all the rage and they continue to gain momentum for good reason. Touted by medical doctors, medical mediums and everyone in between, periodic metabolic detoxification programs offer a healthy strategy to help your body deal with the toxic load of daily modern life. But with all these buzzwords flying around, it’s easy to lose sight of the REAL reasons why we should be aware of detoxification, what the term actually means, and why we should all detox regardless of stellar health practices.

- WHAT ARE TOXINS? -

No one is immune to the toxic load of modern life. We’re all exposed to toxins that tax the body, including

PHTHALATES FROM PLASTIC PACKAGING & PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS

HEAVY METALS IN FISH

PESTICIDES ON FOOD

HORMONES IN CONVENTIONAL MEAT AND DAIRY

CHEMICALS IN CLEANING PRODUCTS

BPA-COATED RECEIPTS

These harmful substances are inhaled, absorbed through the skin or ingested and stored in tissues and cells throughout the body, and can accumulate over time. As they accumulate, they interfere with your body’s normal metabolism, displace nutrients, and make it even more difficult for your body to clear toxins that have collected in the body. This is why we recommend following a metabolic detox program this spring: to help your body eliminate stored toxins and restore optimum health. It’s like spring cleaning yourself!

Our liver, kidneys, lungs, colon, lymph, and skin all work hard to process and expel toxins, but these systems can get overwhelmed in today’s increasingly toxic environment. Even with a healthy diet and our best efforts to eliminate toxic exposure, periodic detoxification support can provide surprising benefits (more on that in upcoming posts).

- HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED DETOX SUPPORT? -

First, it’s important to understand that each person’s capacity for detoxification varies depending on these factors:

AGE

The longer we’re around, the more toxins we accumulate. Plus, as we get older, it becomes more challenging for our bodies to detoxify properly without additional supportive nutrients. Fortunately, targeted nutrition support can overcome this challenge.

NUTRIENT STATUS

Our body’s detoxification pathways — referred to a Phase I and Phase II detoxification — rely on key nutrients to function properly. For example, nutrients like selenium, B vitamins, zinc, and amino acids allow these pathways to neutralize toxins so they can be eliminated from the body. Without optimal nutrient levels, the body’s ability to detoxify may become compromised.

DIET, LIFESTYLE AND EXERCISE HABITS

Many lifestyle factors impact our ability to detoxify, including diet, water intake, exercise, stress levels, and sleep. If any of these factors are less than optimal, toxins are more likely to accumulate in the body.

TOXIC EXPOSURE

Even if you think your toxic load is low, heavy metals like mercury and lead, mold, pesticides and fertilizers hide in places you may not expect. They can be in the air you breath, home, office, furniture, clothing, food and the water you drink.

GENETICS

Certain gene variants can impact our ability to detoxify. One of the best-known examples is variations in the MTHFR gene, which impacts our cell’s methylation pathway, an important detoxification pathway. As a result, the body’s ability to neutralize and eliminate toxins is less efficient.

Deodorant works in one of two ways: in the form of antiperspirants that prevent you from sweating, or as actual de-odorants that allow you to sweat but interfere with the bacterial activity that creates body odor. Of all the potentially toxic personal care products we put on our bodies, antiperspirant might be the most blatant, but both forms can introduce toxins into the body.
